An Evening with Raimund
The work An Evening with Raimund is a tribute to the choreographer Raimund Hoghe from Düsseldorf, who died suddenly and unexpectedly on May 14, 2021 at the age of 72. On that evening his piece Canzone per Ornella was originally supposed to be performed at DANCE 2021 at Muffathalle, and then as an alternative due to the Corona pandemic two cinema evenings with excerpts from his works were scheduled; he personally would attend and comment on and discuss them – the stories, the people, the emotions, the political conditions, the historic times and references which linked him to artists such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Maria Callas, and Rose Ausländer, and which formed the foundation for his works. With the guest performance of An Evening with Raimund, DANCE continues its preoccupation with Raimund Hoghe – which was so tragically interrupted two years ago –, in this encounter with one of the most important German choreographers and recipient of the German award Deutscher Tanzpreis 2020.
The performance of excerpts from Hoghe's works was put together by his collaborators of many years Luca Giacomo Schulte and Emmanuel Eggermont, and it lives from the intertextual work methods of the renowned artist, without simply reenacting his pieces. The work is, however, more than a reference or homage and should be seen as an independent artwork by significant solo artists and choreographers. Luca Giacomo Schulte, Emmanuel Eggermont, Ornella Balestra, Ji Hye Chung, Adrien Dantou, Lorenzo De Brabandere, Kerstin Pohle, Finola Cronin, and Takashi Ueno celebrate here a style of dance theater which is accessible without any reference to the original creator Hoghe, and now in this production develops in a direction of its own.
Raimund Hoghe's work was performed at DANCE already in 2015: Quartet and the lecture performance Ich erinnere mich, and in 2010 Boléro Variations and Body, Space, Music.
An exhibition with photographs by Rosa Frank, who accompanied Raimund Hoghe from the beginning of his career, and a discussion with her about the working methods of Raimund Hoghe, Luca Giacomo Schulte, and Emmanuel Eggermont will be part of the guest performance.
An Evening with Raimund belongs, together with Why Wait? by Tony Rizzi and Hypnogirl 23 by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, to the productions at DANCE that deal with important dance artists.
