Dovydas Strimaitis
The Art of Making Dances
The Lithuanian performer and choreographer Dovydas Strimaitis establishes in his works a strong subsidence and a reduction in movement material, which reveal themselves to us as if they were under a burning glass. Similar as in Hairy 3.0 (also at DANCE 2023), this solo performance is based on the repetition of individual phrases of movement that stealthily change in a subtle process. Formalized, non-Baroque and almost raw steps are presented as material on a dissecting table. A trance-like, hammering beat, created by the sound designer Gedas Mekšriūnas who also comes from Lithuania, pervade throughout the performance.
Strimaitis creates in this work a moment that makes it possible for the audience to see the danced work, by nature transitory, in a more in-depth manner – as when one immerses oneself in a painting or sculpture while looking at it. A grand beauty develops from clarity and calm, which towards the end concentrate into a whirlpool.
Dovydas Strimaitis belongs to the group of young political choreographers from Lithuania who will perform at the venue HochX and in public spaces in Munich as part of the program focusing on Eastern Europe. The Art of Making Dances will be on a double bill with the performative protest Hands Up by Agnietė Lisičkinaitė.
