Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster

Hypnogirl 23

At the beginning of the 20th century, Magdeleine G. caused a huge sensation in Munich with the spectacular dances she performed under hypnosis. The experimental artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster approaches these unusual performances and produces them in the form of a holographic illusion in the historic spaces of the museum Villa Stuck. With this "apparition" a significant moment in the history of dance will be illuminated and can be experienced again – with a spotlight on contemporary perspectives, especially on the subjects of reality and fiction, body and technology.

The basis for the contemporary interpretation is the publication by the Swiss magnetizer Emile Magnin L’Art et l’Hypnose. Interprétation plastique d’oeuvres littéraires et musicales (ca. 1905) with over 200 illustrations by the Geneva photographer Fred (or Frédéric) Boissonas and paintings by Friedrich August von Kaulbach and Albert von Keller as well as photographs from the Bibliotèque de Genève. The book also contains a list of her sensational performances, including 1904 at Münchner Schauspielhaus (today's Kammerspiele).

At DANCE 2023 Angelika Meindl, Tobias Gremmler, and Thomas Mahnecke will also deal with the interwovenness of dance and digitality in Tracing the Negative Space as well as the dramaturge and curator Tobias Staab in Trans Corporal Formations.
