Marie Chouinard
« M » (European Premiere)
Eleven dancers in brightly colored track pants and with just as colorful and fiery bob-haircut wigs, among them naked torsos that we are allowed to observe as they athletically breathe in and out. The group performs an obsessive prayer accompanied by their own sounds, an homage to being alive, between insanity and wisdom. « M » is a fascinating statement by the exceptional Canadian choreographer Marie Chouinard, who has been responsible for internationalfurors for over four decades, and now will be a guest again at DANCE, this year with a European premiere.
Marie Chouinard provokes – she provoked as a performer in her early pieces, and she provokes in the works she creates for the company she founded in 1990. She still activates our vision of and thoughts on dance, the human body, life. In fathoming the borders of a stage performance, her pieces possess an anarchic tone and an exuberant physicalness, which passionately throws itself into extremes. Her signature is theatrical and expressive, indignant and humorous, full of manic breakings of taboos, sexual innuendos and deeply human paradoxes. « M » attests once again to the originality and sensualness of Chouinard's oeuvre, where breathing has always played a special role. She was at DANCE already in 2012 with bODY_rEMIX/gOLDBERG_vARIATIONS, and in 2019 with the two pieces performed on one evening Les 24 Préludes de Chopin / Henri Michaux: Mouvement.
« M » is part of the focus on Montreal at DANCE 2023, together with the opening production The Pretty Things by Catherine Gaudet and Make Banana Cry by Andrew Tay and Stephen Thompson.

The COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD is proud to be carbon neutral. Since 2020, the company has analyzed and offset the carbon footprint of its tours, its productions and its studios. The company supports the Quebec initiative, Carbone boréal, which reforests naturally deserted terrain in the boreal forests north of Lake Saint Jean. These are public lands which are protected by their designation as experimental forests in conjunction with the Quebec Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks. This project is also used for scientific research.
